Mediate B.C. Opens the Door to New Family Roster Members

Mediate B.C. has created a new roster category, which makes provision for acquiring the requisite experience hours, while adhering to the new the FLA Regulations.  The Associate Family Roster is for those who have been trained in family mediation, but lack the experience requirement.  The Associate Family Roster works in conjunction with Mediate BC’s Family Mediation Program (FMP).  Through the FMP, trained mediators (called Associate Mediators) can gain the experience they need to eventually be accepted onto the regular Family Roster.

The FMP will link an Associate Mediator to a Lead Mediator who will co-mediate and mentor the Associate Mediator, allowing the Associate to acquire both the 80 hours of mediation work, and the experience of co-mediating with an experienced mediator. The fee for acceptance onto the Associate Roster is $125 plus GST.  Admission to the FMP is $975 plus GST.  The candidate will pay the Lead Mediator directly for time spent at $50 per hour.

Qualifications for admission to the Roster include 14 hours training in family violence, 21 hours training in family dynamics, 40 hours of family law training, 40 hours of core training and in addition to those, a university or college degree or diploma in law, social sciences or related field.  (See the website for details on Associate Family Roster training requirements http://mediatebc.com/About-the-Rosters/Apply-to-the-Rosters/Associate-Family-Roster-Admission.aspx.  My suspicion is that many of our family bar already meet the training requirements, but lack the 80 hours mediation work (the 80 hours number is down from the previous 200 hours requirement).

If you already meet the 80 hours requirement I encourage you to apply now for admission to the Family Roster.  If you still need all or some portion of the mediation work requirement, the Associate Roster and FMP may meet that need.

I am the Lead Mediator in the Okanagan, and would be happy to answer any questions you may have.  Also if you go to the Mediate BC website through this link http://mediatebc.com/About-the-Rosters/Apply-to-the-Rosters/Application-Procedure.aspx - all the information is there about enrolling in the program.

I believe it is important for the Okanagan to have a large roster of qualified family mediators, and this is a way of increasing that base.  I encourage you to consider this useful program.
